Laurel J. Farrell retired in 2007 after 30 years of service with the State of Colorado and is currently serving as a consultant. Ms. Farrell worked for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for over twenty-one years serving in a variety of capacities in the toxicology and breath alcohol programs. For the last half of her employment she served as the staff authority in the toxicology laboratory routinely providing expert testimony in Colorado courts and in US District Court on the effects of alcohol and other drugs on human performance. When Laurel retired she was an Agent-in-Charge for the Denver Laboratory of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. In this capacity she had supervisory responsibility for a number of the forensic disciplines performed in the laboratory.

Laurel is a member of several professional organizations. As an active member of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists she served for seven years as an officer/director serving as President in 2002. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and in 2008 will receive the Toxicology Section Ray Abernathy Award for Outstanding Forensic Toxicology Practitioner. Laurel served as Chair of the Joint SOFT/AAFS Drugs and Driving Committee from 2000-2002 and as a member on this committee from 1995 to the present. Laurel is currently on the Executive Board for the National Safety Council's Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs and also serves on the Drugs: Technology, Pharmacology and Toxicology Subcommittee for this organization. Laurel has assisted in coordinating a number of continuing education workshops in the area of drug impaired driving for both SOFT and AAFS, has served as guest editor for two volumes of Forensic Science Review focusing on the Effects of Drugs on Human Performance and Behavior and has recently co-authored, with Dr. Barry Logan and Dr. Sarah Kerrigan, an article titled “Recommendations for Toxicological Investigation of Drug Impaired Driving Cases”.

Active with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Drug Evaluation and Classification Program (DECP) since 1988, Laurel is currently the toxicology representative on the DEC and SFST Technical Advisory Panel. She is also serving as an independent contractor for the National Laboratory Certification Program and is an ASCLD/LAB International Assessor.
